Shore Notes began with three women in 1997. Today, 25 women on
the island of Hilton Head in Beaufort County, South Carolina, have the
joy of singing barbershop harmony on a regular basis. Sweet Adelines
International is a music education organization whose purpose is to
preserve a unique American art form and to teach and train its
members in singing barbershop style. Officially organized in 1945 at
the end of World War II with just a handful of women, the Sweet
Adelines today number more than 30,000 with chapters around the
world. Our chapter, The Hilton Head Shore Notes, sings for all kinds
of occasions including celebrations, shows, special events, church groups,
private parties and care facilities. We also produce an annual show,
with proceeds going to local elementary schools to augment their vocal
music programs and for community projects emphasizing music education.
Our chorus won the "Communities in Harmony Award" from Sweet
Adelines International for involvement with Hilton Head schools.
Members of the Shore Notes are nurses, teachers, systems analysts,
social workers, accountants, real estate agents, secretaries, office
managers, and mortgage brokers. Some are retired, many still work
outside the home; but we all share a love of music in general and
barbershop harmony in particular.
